Practical Magic Midnight Margaritas (Two Ways)
Halloween is the season to turn up the cauldron bubbles, light some candles, and lean into a little everyday magic. Whether you’re hosting a coven of friends for a spooky movie night or simply want to toast the witching hour in style, these Practical Magic-inspired midnight margaritas are the perfect way to enchant your guests.
I’m giving you two versions: one that’s a color-changing potion thanks to butterfly pea flower tea, and one that’s smoky, floral, and kissed with lavender honey. Both are absolutely spellbinding.
🌌 Color-Changing Coconut Margarita (with Butterfly Pea Flower Tea)
A frozen coconut margarita that magically changes color when you pour in chilled butterfly pea flower tea. A Halloween party trick in a glass!
Ingredients (per drink)
Black salt, to taste (for rimming)
1 ½ oz coconut tequila (see note for substitutions)
1 oz triple sec
1 oz lime juice
1 cup ice
2 oz butterfly pea flower tea, brewed, chilled, and lightly sweetened
Lime wheel (fresh or dried), optional garnish
Instructions
Rim a margarita glass with black salt.
In a blender, combine tequila, triple sec, lime juice, and ice. Blend until smooth.
Pour the frozen margarita into the prepared glass, leaving a little room at the top.
Gently pour the cold butterfly pea flower tea on top. Watch the practical magic happen as the color shifts.
Garnish with a lime wheel if desired.
Pitcher for 8
1 ½ cups coconut tequila
1 cup triple sec
1 cup lime juice
2 ½ cups ice (add more for a thicker blend)
2 cups butterfly pea flower tea, brewed, sweetened, and chilled
Instructions for 8:
Mix tequila, triple sec, and lime juice up to a day ahead. Keep chilled.
Brew and sweeten butterfly pea flower tea a day in advance.
When ready to serve, blend the tequila mix with ice until frosty.
Pour into glasses (with or without black salt rims) and top with tea for the dramatic effect.
✨ Host’s Note: If you don’t have coconut tequila, you can use regular tequila + a splash of coconut cream or coconut water to capture that tropical vibe.
🔮 Smoky Lavender Mezcal Margarita
This one’s for when you want a darker, more mysterious midnight sip. The smokiness of mezcal pairs beautifully with bright lime juice and homemade lavender honey syrup.
Ingredients (per drink)
2 oz mezcal
2 oz lime juice
1 ½ oz lavender honey syrup (recipe below)
Optional: ½ oz orange liqueur
Ice
Garnish: sprig of lavender + lime wheel
Instructions
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
Add mezcal, lime juice, lavender honey syrup, and orange liqueur if using.
Shake vigorously for 30 seconds.
Strain into a salt-rimmed glass filled with fresh ice.
Garnish with lavender and a lime wheel.
✨ How to Make Lavender Honey Syrup
½ cup honey
½ cup water
2 Tbsp dried culinary lavender
In a small saucepan, combine honey and water. Warm gently, stirring until the honey dissolves.
Add lavender and simmer on low for 2–3 minutes.
Remove from heat and let steep for 10–15 minutes.
Strain out the lavender and store syrup in a sealed jar in the fridge (good for 1–2 weeks).
🕯️ Hosting Tip: Midnight Margaritas Ritual
In Practical Magic, the Owens women sneak into the kitchen at midnight to whip up margaritas and dance under the moonlight. Why not recreate the scene? Queue up the movie soundtrack, light some candles, and invite your guests to join you for a toast. Bonus points if you cackle like Stockard Channing.
